Capri can only be reached by sea. There is no airport and no bridge: every trip starts on a ferry or a hydrofoil, and the crossing is part of the experience.
Where boats leave from
The busiest departure point is Naples: hydrofoils usually leave from Molo Beverello, while slower ferries also use Calata Porta di Massa. The crossing from Sorrento is shorter. In the warmer months there are also seasonal connections from the Amalfi Coast, such as Positano and Amalfi.
Hydrofoil or ferry?
Hydrofoils are faster; ferries are slower but steadier in rough seas, and you can stay outside on deck. Timetables change with the seasons and sea conditions, so always check the operators' websites on the day.
Arriving at Marina Grande
All scheduled boats dock at Marina Grande. From there the funicular climbs to the Piazzetta, in the heart of Capri town, in a few minutes. Buses, taxis and a stepped footpath are the alternatives.
Luggage and getting around
Central Capri has narrow, largely pedestrian lanes. Luggage storage and delivery services operate at the port, so you can reach your hotel hands-free. In summer, cars belonging to non-residents are restricted.
Once you arrive
A few minutes' walk from the Piazzetta is Via L'Abate, home of Ristorante Piccolino, an intimate seven-table restaurant serving Caprese and Neapolitan cuisine: a natural stop for your first lunch or dinner on the island. See the menu and how to book.
